Subject Standards Learned in this Course: Oregon adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards) in March of 2014. Our 7th grade science covers the middle school life science component of these standards.
Classroom Rules: 3 Classroom Rules
Be safe 2. Be responsible 3. Be respectful
What do these rules mean and why do we need them? Be Safe:
Follow safety rules. (Lab safety!)
Ask help from your teacher.
Do not let your actions put others or yourself in dangerous situations.
Follow class procedures.
Be Responsible:
Bring all materials to class.
Finish all homework.
Be in class on time.
Participate in class.
Take ownership of your own actions. (No excuses)
Take ownership of your own learning.
Be Respectful:
Follow classroom procedures.
Respect your peers’ and teacher’s belongings.
Take care of all equipment in the classroom. (Lab supplies, books, materials, etc.)
Be respectful of others’ ideas and thoughts.
Treat others how you want to be treated.
Act like a young adult. (Use good manners, be positive, etc.)
Planner: Your planner is an important tool. ALWAYS use your planner to write down assignments and due dates. In addition to this, your planner will be used as a hall pass. You are only permitted 4 hall passes throughout the semester. Please let me know privately if you need an exception to this policy.
Attendance: Much of the content in this course is best understood by doing activities that allow you to investigate the ideas involved. Therefore, it is important to come to class as often as possible and be an active participant in class.
Interactive Journal: Students will be keeping an interactive science journal in which most work will be done. If the journal is lost the student will be required to recreate the journal using the teacher version. Therefore, it is very important that students be responsible with their journal at all times.
Grading: Classwork and homework = 20% Quizzes and labs = 20% Assessments (tests, major projects) = 60%
Retakes: There will be no retake quizzes or exams. Students may improve scores on quizzes and exams by making corrections within one week of the exam. These corrections must include the correct answer as well as an explanation stating why the answer is correct.
Late Work: Late work will be accepted but the maximum score will be reduced by 10% for each day late until the maximum score is 50%. Assignments will ONLY be accepted until the end of the unit. Once a unit is complete, the score of 0% stands. Students must include the date they turn in the late work on the assignment, or else it will be receive a maximum score of 50%. Example: An assignment worth 10 points turned in 2 days late will be worth a maximum of 8 points. The same assignment turned in 10 days late will be worth a maximum of 5 points.
Make-up Work: Students who have missed school will be expected to check in with Mrs. Brantley to retrieve missed assignments. Students will have as many days as were missed to make up and turn in the assignment. Example: If a student misses 2 consecutive days, the student will have 2 days to complete and turn in missed assignments.
ParentVUE & StudentVUE: Please check Student and ParentVUE every week to stay current on student grades and missing assignments. The link can be found on the Scappoose Middle School website. Any assignment with a 0 is considered missing.
Communication: The main goal of this course is for all students to be successful. If there are ever any questions, comments, or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. The simplest way to contact me is via email at [email protected]. I look forward to an enjoyable and productive year in science.
